Small jumps between places: chips lose value.
This page works through a flat structure where the top prize is only about three times the last one. The numbers are exact results of the ICM model (the probability of finishing first is proportional to the stack, then the same rule for the next place), not estimates.
Share of the prize pool by finishing place:
| 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th | 7th | 8th | 9th |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20% | 16% | 13% | 11% | 10% | 9% | 8% | 7% | 6% |
Example stacks, total 13000 chips:
| Seat | Chips | Share of chips | ICM equity | Equity minus chip share (points) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3000 | 23.1% | 14% | -9.1 |
| 2 | 2500 | 19.2% | 13.3% | -5.9 |
| 3 | 2000 | 15.4% | 12.6% | -2.8 |
| 4 | 1600 | 12.3% | 11.9% | -0.4 |
| 5 | 1300 | 10% | 11.2% | +1.2 |
| 6 | 1000 | 7.7% | 10.5% | +2.8 |
| 7 | 800 | 6.2% | 9.9% | +3.7 |
| 8 | 500 | 3.8% | 8.8% | +4.9 |
| 9 | 300 | 2.3% | 7.8% | +5.5 |
The biggest stack is worth 14% of the prize pool while holding 23.1% of the chips. The smallest stack is worth 7.8% and holds 2.3%.
Bubble factor of the row player when all-in against the column player, for the first 5 seats:
| Hero \ Villain | Seat 1 | Seat 2 | Seat 3 | Seat 4 | Seat 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seat 1 (3000) | — | 1.99 | 1.61 | 1.41 | 1.30 |
| Seat 2 (2500) | 2.77 | — | 1.85 | 1.54 | 1.38 |
| Seat 3 (2000) | 2.65 | 2.58 | — | 1.79 | 1.52 |
| Seat 4 (1600) | 2.51 | 2.45 | 2.38 | — | 1.75 |
| Seat 5 (1300) | 2.39 | 2.34 | 2.28 | 2.22 | — |
Across all pairs the highest bubble factor in this example is 2.77 (seat 2 with 2500 chips all-in against seat 1 with 3000), and the lowest is 1.06 (seat 1 against seat 9). A seat with bubble factor 2.77 needs about 73% equity to call an all-in that offers even odds.
One short lesson a day, each with a worked example in exact numbers: chips vs. money, the bubble factor, who feels the pressure, payout structures, satellites. No account needed.
progressGTO guides use our own solution book (v13, 8-max tournaments with ante, chip EV): an approximation of equilibrium with a modelled postflop, not an exact solution. Numbers are computed from the book and from the exact ICM model.
